On a warm Sunday afternoon in Victoria, British Columbia, the Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 and the Victoria Highlanders kicked off the inaugural Juan de Fuca Plate with a 1-1 draw before 1,172 at Royal Athletic Park.

For both teams it was their second game of the season, as each had earlier home matches against the Seattle Sounders U-23s: Vancouver losing at Swangard Stadium the previous Friday and Victoria drawing at Royal Athletic Park Saturday. It was also the second game of a double-header, as earlier in the afternoon Victoria's women's team, Peninsula Co-op Women's Soccer, defeated the Whitecaps women before much the same crowd.

Both teams swapped fouls in a chippy contest predominantly fought out in the midfield, with the teams recording a combined 27 fouls. A goal late in the first half put Vancouver in front, as University of British Columbia captain Gagandeep Dosanjh worked a highly creative pass to reigning USL PDL Player of the Week Carlos Marquez, who dandily laid the ball off to a streaking Long Tan. Tan, one of two Whitecaps in the starting lineup with MLS contracts, hit a powerful shot past Elliott Mitrou to put the Whitecaps U-23s in front. However, just when Vancouver was letting their guard down at the end of the half, Victoria equalized: midfielder Craig Gorman caught Vancouver's relatively inexperienced defense sleeping off a throw-in, got too much room from a Jared Stephens set-up, and beat Callum Irving with a placed shot.

Throughout the second half both teams brought in offensive substitutes and looked for a winner. Mitrou wound up making five saves while the Highlanders mustered a large number of inaccurate chances that failed to challenge Irving. As the sun set over the west goal, the game settled into a low-offense battle and the two rivals split the first game in Juan de Fuca Plate history with a 1-1 draw.

Scoring Summary

40': 0-1 Vancouver Whitecaps U-23. Long Tan [1] (Carlos Marquez)
